Addressing the challenges facing the Teesside area

Craig Warkman, seconded from Greggs, is helping to address the challenges facing the Teesside area by building relationships between business and local organisations.

Craig’s key achievements in 1 year are:

  • 14 new retail businesses are now trading successfully
  • 150 primary school children benefitting from a Right to Read programme
  • 16 young people now in Apprenticeships with PD Ports
  • 24 young people on Cadetship programme with Tata Steel
  • Launched Business in the Community’s ‘Business Class’ programme in the North East
  • 5 long term partnerships between schools and companies have been established based on the needs of the schools

Craig helped set up the Enterprise Arcade in Middlesbrough. The risks of starting up new retail businesses are prohibitive for young people. To tackle this Craig has transformed a vacant retail space in the town centre into a new enterprise incubation space for young entrepreneurs to test their retail idea in a low cost, low risk environment. The unit was opened in October 2011 and has been a success with 14 businesses - most of which are now looking to expand and open high street shops.
